M – A City Searches for a Murdere (1931)

The original title of the film was "Murderers Among Us". The title could be understood in the singular or the plural. Allegedly, Fritz changed the title under pressure from the Nazis, who felt it was meant for them.

After a visit to the cinema, Joseph Goebbels, in an obvious misinterpretation of the work, noted: "Watched Fritz Lang's film 'M' with Magda in the evening. Fabulous! Against humanitarianism. For the death penalty! Well done.Lang will be our director one day."
Lang will be our director one day."

Boy did he get that wrong....
